If there is, you must return to your breaker box and switch off the breaker for the switch again before you can work on it.

Once the power is off, unscrew the old switch from the electrical box and pull it out with the wires attached. Then, document the placement of each wire with a piece of tape so you can match them up on the new switch. This will help you avoid getting confused while working on the switch.

Depending on the type of switch you’re replacing, there are several different ways to connect the wires. Most modern switches have screw terminals that accept the ends of the wires. Disconnecting

While you are working with electricity, mark the locations of the wires attached to the old switch with a piece of tape so that you can connect them in the same place on the new one. Most switches have two wires that attach to brass screw terminals; a third (or more) wire may attach to a dark-coloured screw terminal, especially in the case of three-way switches. A dimmer switch, for instance, is often connected to the house wiring by short lengths of wire that are fed into the switch body instead of screw terminals. In these cases, it’s crucial to keep the wire colours consistent.

If you have a three-way switch, use a piece of tape to mark the third wire on the same side of the switch with a different colour than the other two. This will help you distinguish them when transferring the leg to the new switch. Then, attach the black (hot) wire to the brass screw terminal on the new switch and the white or neutral wire to the other screw terminal. If your switch has a green ground wire, connect it to the green screw terminal on the new switch or to the green bare copper wire in the electrical box.

Once the connection is made, gently push the new, wired switch back into the electrical box and screw it in place. Screw on the switch plate, then switch on the power at the breaker box to reactivate your home’s electrical system.

Connecting the new switch

Transfer the wires from the old switch to the new one, following the same connection order if possible. If you have a ground wire, connect it to the green terminal on the switch or the bare copper wire in the electrical box. Tighten each terminal screw and then retighten the screwdriver to ensure that it's secure.
